The University at Buffalo softball program was established in 1979, originally competing at the Division III level. The University discontinued the program in 1987. On November 3, 1998, the University announced the reinstatement of the softball program, as mandated by the Mid-American Conference. Marie Curran was named head coach on May 6, 1999.
The 2024 season was the last for 16 Division I softball schools in their current conferences. Eight of the nine softball-sponsoring members of the Pac-12 Conference left for other conferences: Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah joined the Big 12 Conference. Two Division I members, both sponsoring softball, adopted new names after the 2022 season. Neither school's nickname was affected. Dixie State University changed its forward-facing name to Utah Tech University in May 2022, ahead of the legal name change on July 1.
