The Household Searchlight Recipe Book was one of the most-published cookbooks in the United States. It was in print almost continuously from 1931 until 1954 and sold more than 1 million copies. It was published by Capper Publications of Topeka, Kansas, and reprinted five times between 1977 and 1991 by Stauffer Publications.

This book was not a commercial success, [10]: 166–169 but many of the recipes it contained became part of a new edition of Joy of Cooking published during 1943. This edition also included material intended to help readers deal with wartime rationing restrictions, including alternatives to butter in some recipes. [ 14 ]
These books, at approximately 3½ by 5 inches (8.9 by 12.7 cm) easily fit into a working man's back pocket or shirt pocket. The inspiration for the series were cheap 10-cent paperback editions of various expired copyright classic works that Haldeman-Julius had purchased as a 15-year-old (the Ballad of Reading Gaol being especially enthralling).
