Hebbar Iyengar or Hebbari Srivaishnava is a caste of Hindu Brahmins of Tamil and Kannada origin whose members follow the Visishtadvaita philosophy propounded by Ramanuja. They are found primarily in the Indian state of Karnataka especially in Southern Districts.
Ramanuja. The Iyengar community traces its philosophical origins to Nathamuni, the first Sri Vaishnava acharya, [6] who lived around 900 CE. He is traditionally believed to have collected the 4,000 works of Nammalvar and other alvars, [7] the poet-saints of Southern India who were intensely devoted to Vishnu on both an emotional and intellectual plane. [8]
The characteristic dialect of the Hebbar Iyengars is called Hebbar Tamil and is a mixture of Iyengar Tamil, Kannada and Sanskrit. The group's primary mother tongue is Hebbar Tamil which is spoken in most Hebbar Iyengar households, though Kannada and English are increasingly taking its place.
The Hebbar and Mandyam Iyengars who reside outside the native Tamil land, however, continue to use Iyengar Tamil as their mother tongue. So do Ashtagrama Iyers and Mysore Vadama Iyers whose Tamil dialects while largely uses Brahmin Tamil has some Kannada influence.
