My XBolt 6.5 PRC with 156 Bergers at 2950 fps has 1859 fps / 1197 ft lbs at 900 yards. It has 1493 ft lbs at 700 yards. Your out of the box 22" 270 Win shooting a 150 grn will not carry that much energy at distance. Now build it with a fast twist 26" barrel and shoot 170's and then it will outperform the 6.5 PRC.
There's better bullet options and more of them for long range in 6.5 than in .270cal. There's also more high quality brass for the 6.5 PRC than the .270 Win. The 6.5 PRC will also have a fast twist rate from the factory for the heavy, long range, high BC bullets. The .270 will be limited to 150gr or lighter bullets because of the twist.
The PRC has less wind drift and more energy on target. Again both are good cartridges, the PRC is just better at longer ranges. .270 Winchester. View attachment 307443. 6.5 PRC. View attachment 307444. Click to expand... The gain goes to prc, but drop and drift is close enough for a good kill.
Not a dimes worth of difference in drop and drift within all practical hunting ranges it just doesn't matter. 270, 280, 7 mag, 7 08 30 06, all as good as the 6.5 PRC, and better than the 6.5 Creedmoor.if you are a sane and ethical hunter.
87. Location. Santa Barbara County. Jul 14, 2020. #5. I have both 7mm Mag and 6.5PRC rifles. I'd rather shoot the PRC all day long rather than the 7mm. The recoil is much less than what you'd think. You can buy the 6.5 in 156gr bullet now but the 143gr does the job.
The newest things aren't really that new there just refined. To your question, the 270 Win can do anything in the game field that any 6.5mm can do including the 6.5 PRC or 264 Win Mag. Even the 26 Nosler and 6.5-300 Wby, while they are fast and flat offer little over the 270 Win on game at shooting distances.
Merry Christmas. Quintus said: I shoot and love all 3. For it's purpose I really like the 6.5RPM. I have it in a Backcountry Carbon and it is easy to carry, very accurate, and will run very close to the 264. For Elk on down with appropriate twist barrels they are all pretty similar. The 270 Wby is under rated.
N. Texas and S. Africa. Feb 4, 2022. #60. COBigJohn said: Well, it didn't take long for me to fold for the PRC 'kool aid'. Found a Savage Model 10 with a medium-heavy, ported barrel for a great price and I snagged it. Can't wait to shoot it, but heck.... I ain't paying $5+ a pill right now. The dies are purchased and on the way.
The 6.5-270 has been around for decades known as the 6.5x64 Brenneke. It holds slightly more powder than the 6.5-06 or PRC. There is nothing magic about the PRC case. It is confined to the the laws of physics the same as any other case. A fixed amount of powder generates a fixed amount of expanding gases which drives the bullet to a certain speed.
Kinda like the 6.5-284 vs 6.5 PRC. The only advantage to the new 6.8 W is it's faster barrel allowing longer heavier bullets to stabilize and the cartridge OAL is right around 3.00 with the long heavy bullets allowing it to be used in a short action rifle. Beyond that, no real advantage ballistically over the .270win.
