The Department of Health is the executive department of the national government that is assigned to oversee healthcare in South Africa, reporting to the Minister of Health. The Office for Health Standards and Compliance was established in 2014. [2]
It is one of the 40 Gauteng provincial hospitals, and is financed and managed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health. It is a teaching hospital for the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School, along with the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital , Helen Joseph Hospital and the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital . She has served as the Gauteng MEC (Member of the Executive Council) for Health and Wellness since October 2022. She was the MEC for Finance and e-Government from May 2019 until October 2022. Nkomo-Ralehoko was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in June 1999. She briefly served as the Education MEC in May 2019.
In May, the Gauteng province health department declared an outbreak in Hammanskraal. [7] Fifteen deaths and 41 cases had been recorded as of May 22. [7] Residents blamed the local government for failing to provide adequate potable water. [7] [8] By July 10, nearly 50 deaths had been recorded, [9] most of which occurred in Hammanskraal. [9]
