The Navy program separated in 1955, forming the Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) at NAS Pensacola. All Aviation Officer Candidates (AOCs) were 4 year college or university graduates instructed by Navy personnel and trained by Marine Corps Drill Instructors. NavCads continued to be integrated into AOCS.
Navy OCS is an extremely challenging experience. Due to the heavy influence of the class drill instructor, a Marine Corps drill instructor who is usually a gunnery sergeant in rank, but may be a staff sergeant, the training resembles Marine Corps boot camp with Navy officer course material instead of Marine infantry training.
