The wind industry now generates enough electricity to power more than 43 US million homes with more than 70,000 turbines. But there’s one problem that urgently needs addressed, writes Louise Boyle
Many wind turbine blades are made of fiberglass and some only had a lifetime of 10 to 20 years. [83] Previously, there was no market for recycling these old blades, [84] and they were commonly disposed of in landfills. [85] Because blades are hollow, they take up a large volume compared to their mass.
Models 1500 and 3000 use pultruded fiberglass blades. By 2010, Windstar Model 636 turbines were placed on the transitional list for approved wind energy generation systems qualifying for the FIT (Feed-in-Tariff) energy pricing in the UK. In 2011, Wind Harvest International, Inc. began the process for MCS certification of the Model 636 LAVTS.

Global and its executives “dumped and abandoned 1,300 decommissioned wind-turbine blades in stockpiles across the state,” Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said in a news release. “We are ...

The turbine had two blades, 175 feet (53 m) in diameter, on the down-wind side of a 120-foot (37 m)-foot steel lattice tower. Each blade was approximately 8 feet (2.4 m) wide and 66 feet (20 m) long, and weighed eight tons. The blades were built on steel spars and covered with a stainless steel skin.
Wind farm developers ordered around 20,000 turbines – each with several individual blades – in 2023. “If we consider that for scale, then the failure rate remains low,” Mukherjee said.
