Grimms' Fairy Tales, originally known as the Children's and Household Tales (German: Kinder- und Hausmärchen, pronounced [ˌkɪndɐ ʔʊnt ˈhaʊsmɛːɐ̯çən], commonly abbreviated as KHM), is a German collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, first published on 20 December 1812.
The Brothers Grimm's story was developed from the French literary fairy tale of Persinette by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force (1698), which itself is an alternative version of the Italian fairy tale Petrosinella by Giambattista Basile (1634). [2] [3] The tale is classified as Aarne–Thompson type 310 ("The Maiden in The Tower"). [4]
The Grimm story, which is commonly referred to as "Snow White", [3] should not be confused with the story of "Snow-White and Rose-Red" (in German "Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot "), another fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. In the Aarne–Thompson folklore classification, tales of this kind are grouped together as type 709, Snow White.
Wilhelm Carl Grimm (also Karl; [a] 24 February 1786 – 16 December 1859) was a German author and anthropologist. He was the younger brother of Jacob Grimm , of the literary duo the Brothers Grimm .
The tale was published by the Brothers Grimm in the first edition of the Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812, under the name "Die drei Raben" (The Three Ravens). In the second edition, in 1819, the name was retitled Die sieben Raben and substantially rewritten. Their source was the Hassenpflug family, and others. [3]
Here's what we do know for sure: until they were collected by early catalogers Giambattista Basile, Charles Perrault, and The Brothers Grimm, fairy tales were shared orally. And, a look at the sources cited in these first collections reveals that the tellers of these tales — at least during the Grimms' heydey — were women.
