4 September – The network television premiere of the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service on ITV, starring George Lazenby. [9] 5 September The US soap opera Dallas is broadcast for the first time in the UK on BBC1. Thames Television launches a lunchtime Thames News bulletin presented by Robin Houston.
It is credited as being the United Kingdom's first breakfast television programme, six years before the launch of TV-am and the BBC's Breakfast Time in 1983. [4] [5] Both programmes run at the same time, with Tyne Tees' Good Morning North and Yorkshire's Good Morning Calendar. Both programmes finish on Friday 27 May.
1 December – Punk group The Sex Pistols cause a storm of controversy and outrage in the UK by swearing well before the 9pm watershed on the regional Thames Television news programme Today, hosted by Bill Grundy who has goaded them into doing so and is temporarily sacked. Today is replaced by Thames at Six a year later.
