A Lesson Before Dying is Ernest J. Gaines' eighth novel, published in 1993 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award.The novel is based on the true story of Willie Francis, a young Black American man best known for surviving a failed electrocution in the state of Louisiana, in 1946.

A Lesson Before Dying has nothing to do with Mexico and was set in 1940's Louisiana. I am not sure what novel has been described, but it is definetly not A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines. The sources cited from Spark Notes at the bottom of the page seems to describe the correct novel.
