Astronomy in India has been a passion since the Vedic period. Records exist of scriptures on the subject since the time of the Maurya Dynasty in the (322 to 185 BCE). It came to be recognized as a science after Aryabhata penned and published the Arya-siddhānta. Today Aryabhata is regarded as the father of astronomy in India.
It was founded to promote astronomy following an appearance of Halley’s Comet. [12] Initially there was strong support for such a society and by 30 September 1911 there were 239 members (192 original and a net 47 added during the first session). [13] The society was run along similar lines to the British Astronomical Association. [14]
Through Islamic astronomy, Indian astronomy had an influence on European astronomy via Arabic translations. During the Latin translations of the 12th century , Muhammad al-Fazari 's Great Sindhind (based on the Surya Siddhanta and the works of Brahmagupta ), was translated into Latin in 1126 and was influential at the time.
