Today's club was formed in 1945, and named after Kevin Barry. The club won the Junior Football Championship in 1949. They beat Dungannon in the final in a low scoring game 2-3 to 1-1. Derrylaughan would become a permanent fixture in the senior ranks for the next 40 years winning two county titles.

In the early 1950s the club changed its name to the Kevin Barry's, named after the patriot Kevin Barry and played in black and amber colours. Its nickname was "the B's". Its nickname was "the B's". Soon after, in 1956, the current club, Pádraig Pearse's GAC Kilrea, was formed, and chose to play in red and white jerseys.
