Spasmolytics, also known as "centrally acting" muscle relaxant, are used to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and spasms and to reduce spasticity in a variety of neurological conditions. While both neuromuscular blockers and spasmolytics are often grouped together as muscle relaxant, [ 1 ] [ 2 ] the term is commonly used to refer to spasmolytics only.
Medications are commonly used for movement disorders, but research has not shown functional benefit for some drugs. [ 6 ] [ 7 ] Some studies have shown that medications have been effective in decreasing spasticity, but that this has not been accompanied by functional benefits.
The spasms can also affect the facial muscles, resulting in an appearance called risus sardonicus. Chest, neck, back, abdominal muscles, and buttocks may be affected. Back muscle spasms often cause arching, called opisthotonus. Sometimes, the spasms affect muscles utilized during inhalation and exhalation, which can lead to breathing problems. [10]
