Charles Gregory Crampton (March 22, 1911 – May 2, 1995) was a historian at the University of Utah best known for documenting cultures and artifacts in Glen Canyon before it was flooded by the Glen Canyon Dam. The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a colorful series of gorges, most of which now are buried under the reservoir. Construction of Glen Canyon Dam began in 1956 and was finished in 1966. When the reservoir filled, the dam began to deliver a steady, regulated flow of water downstream and generate a cheap, plentiful supply of electricity.
Lees Ferry is located in northern Arizona, at the point where the Paria River joins the Colorado from the north. Lying in an open valley directly downstream from Glen Canyon and shortly above Marble Canyon (the uppermost section of the Grand Canyon), it is the only place in more than 260 miles (420 km) where the Colorado is not hemmed in by sheer canyon walls.
