Hence, if this got reset every time i reboot my system, pretty much every one of Microsoft's updates would have had to get installed in the fully automatic manner, which they did not. I did not count the updates, but I think there were at least 30-40 individual updates from Microsoft in 2011, ignoring that some updates contain multiple patches.

Every time I reboot the computer, the action center tells me to turn the automatic updates on. I do that, and it turns off again. I've run malwarebyes and my virus scan and cleaned up anything it found, but that doesn't make any difference. I've also run the scannow, and it's not found any problems. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?
Win7 is actually pretty good about updates - and you can usually in a clean install simply install the SPs, and then force an Update check, and install all the available Important updates at once without a problem - then repeat.
I'm asking this because all of these years, I have had windows update set to "Install updates automatically," and I believe there were definitely times where I've installed programs while windows update was doing its thing in the background.
