At 50 yards, energy drops to 760 ft lbs and at 100 yds there is still 632 ft lbs left .... plenty for a clean kill. If you zero your sights at 50 yards, bullet drop at 100 yards will be about 5", which is still within limits.

Well withing the normal operating range of the bullet. If you had a max load of 2400, getting 1400 fps from handgun, then it may well go up to 1800 fps from the rifle barrel, as that powder is more optimized in longer barrels. In this case, you would have to worry about over-driving the bullet, causing over-expansion and lack of penetration.

I also have a 12 inch Thompson Hunter with an inclosed chamber unnlike a revolver open on both ends of the cylinder. It almost reaches 16 inch velosities of a shoort lever rifle.

A faster burn rate magnum powder such as Blue Dot produces a delta of only 62 fps between a 5.5" vs a 7.5" barrel. A normal burn rate magnum powder such as H-110 produces a delta of 122 fps. A very slow magnum powder such as H-4227 produces a higher delta of 165 fps. These are all computer models and not actual measured velocities.
The value is really just in points 2 and 3. Two points about your point 1: 1) External Ballistics rarely actually matter for the 44mag, we simply don't shoot them far enough. 2) More importantly: Surprisingly, the 44mag 225grn FTX doesn't actually have better aerodynamics than similar bullets!

My understanding is you can reduce posted data by about 25-30% to get an idea. Just wondering if anyone has actually measured and posted tables ...
