At 50 yards, energy drops to 760 ft lbs and at 100 yds there is still 632 ft lbs left .... plenty for a clean kill. If you zero your sights at 50 yards, bullet drop at 100 yards will be about 5", which is still within limits.

  3. 30-30 vs 44 mag lever - The High Road

Rather this is a question as to why the 44 lever gun isn’t as popular as the 30-30. The 44 mag. can launch a 180 gr bullet about as fast as the 30-30 does with a 170 gr out of its short barrel. Plus, the 44 can shoot 300 gr bullets at just north of 1000 fps. It isn’t blistering fast but will certainly penetrate just about anything if your ...

  4. .44 mag terminal ballistics from a 16" or 20" barrel

Well withing the normal operating range of the bullet. If you had a max load of 2400, getting 1400 fps from handgun, then it may well go up to 1800 fps from the rifle barrel, as that powder is more optimized in longer barrels. In this case, you would have to worry about over-driving the bullet, causing over-expansion and lack of penetration.

Google Balistics By The Inch 44 magnum. This is a good chart that seems to be pretty accurate. Notice that the 10 1/2 super Blackhawk isn;t that far from rifle velocities. I also have a 12 inch Thompson Hunter with an inclosed chamber unnlike a revolver open on both ends of the cylinder. It almost reaches 16 inch velosities of a shoort lever rifle.

  7. 44 mag vs 45 colt - Ruger Forum

    www.rugerforum.net/threads/44-mag-vs-45-colt.395941

It should be noted that 45 Colt’s usually shoot bullets approximately .452-.454” in diameter and the 44 Mag shoots bullets .4295 - .431” in diameter. The 45 is a “45” and the 44 is a “43”. Both use the same case length of 1.285” and approximately the same rim diameter of .512 (45) and .514 (44). Because the 44 is a 43 and its ...

A faster burn rate magnum powder such as Blue Dot produces a delta of only 62 fps between a 5.5" vs a 7.5" barrel. A normal burn rate magnum powder such as H-110 produces a delta of 122 fps. A very slow magnum powder such as H-4227 produces a higher delta of 165 fps. These are all computer models and not actual measured velocities.

The value is really just in points 2 and 3. Two points about your point 1: 1) External Ballistics rarely actually matter for the 44mag, we simply don't shoot them far enough. 2) More importantly: Surprisingly, the 44mag 225grn FTX doesn't actually have better aerodynamics than similar bullets!

  10. Ballistics Ruger redhawk alaskan 44 mag - Ruger Forum

It has a short barrel and I can't find measured muzzel velocities or energy postings. My understanding is you can reduce posted data by about 25-30% to get an idea. Just wondering if anyone has actually measured and posted tables ...

I got to shoot cattle in the head with a 22 LR, 9 mm, 38 Spec, 357 Mag, 44 spec, 44 mag, 45 ACP, 45LC, and a 30 Herret Contender over those 4 1/2 years. I had just bought a Colt 9mm and brought it in to give it a try.
