The Eurasia Tunnel (Turkish: Avrasya Tüneli) is a road tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey, crossing underneath the Bosphorus Strait. The tunnel was officially opened on 20 December 2016 [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] and opened to traffic on 22 December 2016.
The project was officially announced by Prime minister Ahmet Davutoğlu on 27 February 2015. [3] [4] The tunnel, 6.5 km (4.0 mi) in length and 18.80 m (61.7 ft) in diameter, will consist of three levels, two levels for road traffic and one level for metro lines.
The Marmaray Tunnel was opened to passenger traffic on 29 October 2013. In March 2019 the overground part of the Marmaray project were completed and normal train traffic, including commuter (entire line), YHT and freight services started to run through the tunnel. The tunnel is the deepest immersed tube tunnel in the world.
