Kohala (Hawaiian pronunciation:) is the name of the northwest peninsula of the island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Archipelago. In ancient Hawaii it was often ruled by an independent High Chief called the Aliʻi Nui. In modern times it is divided into two districts of Hawaii County: North Kohala and South Kohala.
Kohala Historical Sites State Monument can only be reached by a dirt road from Upolu Airport and is located about 1½ miles off the Akoni Pule Highway. Turn North on Upolu Point road near the town of Hawi, and West at the small air strip. [11] A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended, especially if it has been raining. [12]
Kapa'au is in the North Kohala District of Hawaiʻi County. It is bordered to the east by Halaʻula, and Hāwī is 2 miles (3 km) to the west. Hawaii Route 270 is the main road through the community.

Hawi (Hawaiian: Hāwī; pronounced [haː'viː]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaii. The population was 2,268 at the time of the 2020 United States Census. Hawi is situated to the west of the community of Kapaau. Together, they comprise the most densely-populated region in the district of North Kohala.

Halaula is in the North Kohala region and peninsula, on the northern side of the island of Hawaiʻi.It is bordered to the west by Kapaau. Hawaii Route 270 is the main road through the community, leading west then south 22 miles (35 km) to Hawaii Route 19 at Waikui and east 4 miles (6 km) to its terminus at an overlook of the Pololū Valley.
The name lapa kahi means "single ridge" in the Hawaiian Language, and applied to the ahupuaʻa, an ancient land division that ran from the sea up to Kohala Mountain. [4] It is located off of ʻAkoni Pule Highway (Route 270), 12.4 miles (20.0 km) north of Kawaihae, Hawaii. [5]
