It is based upon Toshihiro Nagoshi's 2005 video game Ryū ga Gotoku, known in the West as Yakuza, released on PlayStation 2. This drama stars puroresu champion Masakatsu Funaki in the title role and is a prequel to the inaugural installment of the Yakuza series , which was itself adapted by Takashi Miike as Like a Dragon: The Movie in 2007.
In Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin! and its remake Like a Dragon: Ishin!, Kiryu's avatar is once again used for the protagonist Sakamoto Ryōma. In the film adaptation Like a Dragon: Prologue, he is portrayed by professional wrestler and mixed martial arts pioneer Masakatsu Funaki.
A second Like a Dragon series spin-off set in samurai era, Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin!, was released in 2014 on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 systems, though Ishin! is set two centuries later than Kenzan! and is not considered a narrative sequel.
Inoue is featured in Kaze Hikaru (manga), Getsumei Seiki (manga), Studio Deen's Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan (anime), and The Blue Wolves of Mibu (manga and anime.) In the 2014 game Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin!, Serizawa Kamo kills Miburoshigumi captain Inōe Genzaburo, and takes on the dead man's identity at the behest of leader Kondō Isami. He says that three of the existing captains must take on the role of the dead Mito faction members in order to keep the group alive, which he then renames the Shinsengumi.
