The area has been the town center since settlement of the town began in the 1720s. Prominent in the district are the Westford Academy building and the First Parish Church, two fine Federal style structures built in 1794, and the Italianate town hall, built in 1871. [2] The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. [1]

Montgomery Ward closed in 1988. In 1991, Nordstrom announced plans to open its second Chicago area location at Old Orchard. In addition to a 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m 2) Nordstrom, Old Orchard also expanded the mall by 100,000 square feet (9,300 m 2) as part of a $200 million expansion. The mall featured a food court, and until 2013, formerly a large children's play area at the center. [6] Following the closure of three of its four anchor stores , JCPenney , Lord & Taylor , and Sears in 2019, Macy's remained as the mall's final remaining anchor store until 2023, [ 7 ] with the rest of the mall closing shortly after. [ 8 ]
Retail establishments at the shopping center included Hess Shoes, Food Fair, Tommy Tucker, Whelan's Drugs, and Hochschild, Kohn & Co. [2] Racial succession and white flight occurred in Edmondson Village as a result of the real estate sales process of blockbusting between 1955 and 1965. [ 3 ]
