In 1999, in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd, downtown Franklin was submerged under as much as 12 ft (3.7 m) of water as the Blackwater River swelled to a historic crest of 26.4 ft (8.0 m). State Route 122 (SR 122) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 54.58 miles (87.84 km) from SR 40 in Rocky Mount north to U.S. Route 501 (US 501) in Big Island. SR 122 passes through the Blue Ridge foothills of Franklin and Bedford counties, connecting Rocky Mount with the town of Bedford.
