Shinji Ikari (Japanese: 碇 シンジ, Hepburn: Ikari Shinji) is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise created by Gainax. He is the franchise's poster boy and protagonist. In the anime series of the same name, Shinji is a boy abandoned by his estranged father, Gendo, after the mysterious death of Shinji's mother, Yui.

Naoko, after completing the Magi supercomputers, finds Rei alone and lost in Gehirn's base; Rei starts calling Naoko "old hag", saying it was Gendo who referred to her that way. Naoko recognizes in Rei the somatic features of Yui; she strangles and kills Rei and then dies by suicide. After Naoko's death, Gehirn is restructured and renamed Nerv.
Meanwhile, Shinji's consciousness goes on an introspective odyssey while merged with Unit 01 in which he comes into contact with the soul of his mother, Yui Ikari. After speaking with Yui, Shinji is "reborn" from Unit 01's exposed core. Later that evening, Misato and Kaji resume their love affair.
