In 1993, the Hess's chain sold several of its locations to Alcoa, Tennessee-based Proffitt's, which in turn sold its stores to Belk in 2006.
The mall was first planned in 1972 as Kellogg Mall, but was later changed to Towne East Square. Construction began in 1973, [ 7 ] and officially opened on August 14, 1975, [ 8 ] and was the first large, modern, multi-level enclosed mall in Wichita.
There are six new businesses coming to Towne East Square, including five retailers and one restaurant. The retailers include a couple of especially popular names.
The original center underwent a major renovation in the late 1980s. The eastern half of the structure was razed. The western portion, and the two anchor stores, were incorporated into the first phase of a 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m 2), enclosed shopping mall. Renamed Kenwood Towne Centre, it opened in October 1987.
