Petrobangla was founded in 1985(Notification of Ordinance-21 in 11-April,1985) by merging two government organizations Bangladesh Oil & Gas Corporation (BOGC) and Bangladesh Mineral Exploration and Development Corporation (BMEDC) into Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation(BOGMC). [3]

As of 2024, Bangladesh currently has 29 gas fields, with 20 of them in production. Petrobangla estimates that the proven reserves are at 28.79 trillion cubic feet (TCF). Out of which 20.33 TCF has been extracted until June 2023, leaving the reserve at 8.46 TCF. [16] The Bibiyana gas field in Habiganj District is the country's largest gas field.
Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited was established on 7 June 1980 as Bakhrabad Gas Systems Limited with the responsibility to operate Bakhrabad Gas Field.
Gas Transmission Company Limited was established on 14 December 1993 under the Companies Act of 1993, as a public limited company with an authorized capital of Tk.100 billion of 100,00,000.00 shares of Tk.1000 each.
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited was established in 1989 by the Government of Bangladesh through dissolving the Exploration Directorate of Petrobangla. [3] In October 2017, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited discovered gas in Bhola, Shahbazpur Gas Field. [4]
With the completion of Hobigonj Tea Valley Project, a Program on Sylhet Town Gas Supply Project was initiated by Petrobangla. On the merger of the two projects in 1977, formal gas distribution in Sylhet town started in 1978.
Currently there are 28 natural gas fields in Bangladesh. [1] The first gas field was discovered at Haripur, Sylhet in 1955 and the last gas field was discovered in the 2017 at Bhola. [2]
