During World War II the center became the largest military supply installation in the world. In December 1942, an additional 295 acres (1.19 km 2) were purchased. With more than 10,000 civilian employees, it played a large part in the overall war effort. Some of the warehouses were turned into secured barracks to house prisoners of war.
The Ohio Military Reserve (OHMR) is one of three separate components that make up the Ohio State Defense Force (SDF). Like other SDF's the Ohio Military Reserve functions as a reserve to the Ohio National Guard. State Defense Forces are not eligible for federal funding and must request their assets from the state.

The facility opened in June 1942 as Lockbourne Army Airfield, named for the nearby village of Lockbourne.
