Founded in 1793, [1] Hollidays Cove was the earliest permanent white settlement in what was then Brooke County, Virginia, later becoming Hancock County, West Virginia. The settlement was named after John Holliday, who built a log cabin in a valley (or "cove", in local terminology) on Harmon's Creek in 1776.
Harmon Creek rises about 0.2 miles (0.32 km) south of Florence, Pennsylvania, in Washington County and then flows south and west into West Virginia and Brooke County and briefly turns north into Hancock County to join the Ohio River at the south end of Weirton.
