Daily dinner menu at Parker's Restaurant in 1865. Parker's Restaurant predates the historic Parker House Hotel by 22 years. Harvey D. Parker, a coachman for a Watertown woman, frequently dined in a cellar cafe owned by John E. Hunt whenever he visited Boston. In 1832, Parker purchased the cafe from Hunt for $432 and renamed it Parker's Restaurant.
At the northern end of the dam stand the surviving elements of the 19th-century mills, now adapted for other uses. Next to it is the 1857 Parker House, a fine Second Empire home built by a mill owner. The village includes two cemeteries, several church buildings (some converted to other uses, and a former library, built in 1909. [2]
The property has served most of the time since then as an inn and restaurant, but has also seen use as a retreat center and nursing home. The club began meeting informally at the Albion House in Boston. [1] Publishing agent and lawyer Horatio Woodman first suggested the gatherings among his friends for food and conversation. [2] By 1856, the organization became more structured with a loose set of rules, with monthly meetings held over dinner at the Parker House. [1]
The hotel opened in 1855 and expanded in 1858. Around 1880, with Joseph H. Beckman and Edward O. Punchard, Parker established the firm Harvey D. Parker & Co. His partners took over the business after Parker's death in 1884. On November 16, 1882, a large public dinner was held in honor of Parker's 50 years in business. [3]
