Burgum was born on August 1, 1956, in Arthur, North Dakota, the son of Katherine (née Kilbourne) and Joseph Boyd Burgum. He has a brother, Bradley, and a sister, Barbara. [2] [3] He was born where his grandfather established a grain elevator in 1906. [4]
