Prisons in Denmark are classified in the following categories: state prisons, local prisons, as well as the Western Prison in Copenhagen. State prisons may be closed , semi-open, and open . In local prisons and in the Western Prison many rules are the same as in closed state prisons.
1943 - Camp taken over by the German occupiers forces in Denmark to accommodate troop transports, equipment and prisoners of war. 1945 - On 27 August the camp was taken over by the Danish prison system under the name Criminal camp at Kragskovhede. It was used among other things to house traitors of Denmark.
Construction of the prison buildings began in August 2004 and was completed by Summer 2006. The prison was officially opened on 2 October 2006 and received its first inmates shortly after on 16 October 2006. Construction costs totaled 403 million DKK.
