Amherst (/ ˈ æ m h ər s t / AM-hərst) [5] is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. It is located 28 miles (45 km) west of Cleveland within the Cleveland metropolitan area . The population was 12,681 at the 2020 census .
Amherst Township was established as a judicially-independent township in 1830, and named after Amherst, New Hampshire. [5] It had been originally created as "Town(ship) number 6 in the 18th Range" (of the Connecticut Western Reserve); but prior to 1830, it was judicially attached to "Black River township".
State Route 58 (SR 58) is a north–south state highway in northern Ohio maintained by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The 41.627 miles (66.992 km) that make up SR 58 serve the cities of Ashland, Wellington, Oberlin, Amherst, and Lorain in Ashland and Lorain Counties.
