Portland Public Library is the main library of the public library system in Portland, Maine, USA. It is located at 5 Monument Square on Congress Street in the Old Port of Portland, Maine . The library has three neighborhood branches, Burbank branch (in Deering ), Peaks Island branch, and Riverton branch.
The library is named for Llewellyn Lithgow, an Augusta merchant, who bequeathed $20,000 to the City of Augusta to build a public library. [3] The building's construction consumed those funds plus a $9,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie, [4] plus money raised through the sale of subscriptions to local citizens.
The first library established in Camden was known as the Federal Society's Library, and was started in 1796 with a collection of 200 books.
