The Middlebury College Snowbowl is a ski area in Hancock, Vermont, 13 miles (21 km) east of Middlebury in the Green Mountains. The site has been owned and operated by Middlebury College since its first trails were cut in 1934. [1] The Snowbowl has 17 trails and 3 lifts, offering access to more than 700 acres (2.8 km 2) of terrain.
The major trail visible from the Mid-Lodge (Upper/Lower Warren's Way) is the main training trail for Burke Mountain Academy, and other local racing organizations. The D-Bar lift services both Upper and Lower Warren's Way , and is closed to the public when race training is in progress; unless the Mid-Burke chairlift is closed.
In the winter, the resort centers around skiing and snowboarding. A fleet of Hall double chairlifts service a variety of terrain, including novice trails at Morse Mountain and The Village area, and intermediate and expert terrain on the main mountains, Sterling and Madonna. Smugglers Notch is the only resort in Vermont with a triple black diamond.
Mount Snow is one of the first ski resorts in the nation to offer lift service mountain biking. Mount Snow Bike Park is open for downhill mountain biking, [18] golfing is at Mount Snow Golf Club, [19] and hiking and scenic chairlift rides. Stratton was established in December 1961 with three double chairlifts and a three-story base lodge. Although the mountain was top notch, the access road was a disaster; it was paved in 1962, prior to the second season, and two T-bar lifts were added in 1963 for the third season.
