The Carter system, also known as the Chicago system, was a method of wiring three-way switches in the era of early knob-and-tube wiring. This now-obsolete wiring method has been prohibited by the USA National Electrical Code since 1923, [ 2 ] even in new knob-and-tube installations which are still permitted under certain circumstances.

A gooseneck is a semi-rigid, flexible joining element made from a coiled metal hose. Similar to its natural counterpart , it can be bent in almost any direction and remain in that position. [ 1 ] Areas of application for goosenecks are movable brackets for lights , magnifying glasses , microphones and other devices. [ 2 ]

A rack and pinion has roughly the same purpose as a worm gear with a rack replacing the gear, in that both convert torque to linear force. However the rack and pinion generally provides higher linear speed — since a full turn of the pinion displaces the rack by an amount equal to the pinion's pitch circle whereas a full rotation of the worm screw only displaces the rack by one tooth width.
