The races moved to Orlando for the 1981 and 1982 national championships, but quickly was moved back to Balboa Park in San Diego in 1983.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships was the 83rd edition of the annual NCAA Men's Division I Cross Country Championship and the 41st annual NCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Championship to determine the team and individual national champions of NCAA Division I men's and women's collegiate cross country running in the United States.
Known as the NCAA College Division Men's Cross Country Championship until 1973, it was created for cross country programs from smaller universities and colleges. A third championship, the NCAA Men's Division III Cross Country Championship , split away in 1973 when the NCAA created its current three-division structure.
