UWI-SRC was established in 1953, as the Volcanological Research Department of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. In the early 1960s the department became the Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies, and in 2008 was formally established as a research centre within the university, and took on the name Seismic Research Centre.
Map showing the epicenters of all the magnitude 5 and greater earthquakes in the eastern region of the Caribbean for the last 100 years. Filled circle color indicates depth and circle size indicates magnitude. The five biggest, most destructive, earthquakes of the last 250 years with magnitudes of 7 and greater are shown by stars.
Note: The inclusion criteria for adding events are based on WikiProject Earthquakes' notability guideline that was developed for stand alone articles. The principles described also apply to lists. The principles described also apply to lists.
To map the subduction zone, researchers at sea performed active source seismic imaging, a technique that sends sound to the ocean floor and then processes the echoes that return. The method is ...
The earthquake consisted of two shocks, 10 minutes apart, and the two tsunamis came 10 minutes after each shock. Shaking reportedly lasted a minute in Frederiksted, where the earthquake stirred a dust cloud that blanketed the town. [4] Shaking reached intensity IX on the Rossi–Forel scale in the Danish West Indies.
The earthquake was initially reported with a 5.0 magnitude. The area was hit by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake on Monday, July 22. Scurry County is home to around 16,932 people, according to its website .
Joseph graduated from UWI St Augustine in 1999 with a BSc degree in Chemistry and Zoology. She went on to complete an MPhil in Chemistry in 2003. In 2008, Joseph was the first PhD graduate in volcanology from UWI, with a thesis titled "Geochemistry of Geothermal Systems in Saint Lucia and Dominica, Lesser Antilles: Implications for Volcanic Monitoring”. She joined the academic staff at the UWI in 1999 whilst working toward a doctorate in the Tobago and Earthquakes. She was eventually promoted to Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre. [8] She was responsible for the collection of seismic data from fifty stations throughout the Eastern Caribbean. [9]
