The Horne claims, together with a number of other properties that had been acquired developed Noranda into an outstanding copper-gold producer. Noranda went on to employ more than 32,000 people, and have assets in excess of $11.8 billion. Edmund Henry Horne died on March 15, 1953, in Halifax. [3]
The town itself was founded by General Engineering Co Limited (later Noranda; now part of Xstrata) after staking claims in 1953 in support of a copper mine. [4] The other mine in Manitouwadge is the Willroy mine, named after two of the "Weekend Prospectors" William Dawidowich and Roy Barker. Full production at Geco and Willroy began in 1957.
Noranda permitted and built the Golden Giant mine in less than two years. With its first pour in April 1985, the Golden Giant was the first mine in the camp to ship. Peak production occurred in 1992, at just over 450,000 oz t. During its 21-year life, the mine produced over 7 million ounces of gold, as well as some 137,000 ounces of silver. [3] [4]
