It was originally named Bennett's Station for John Bennett, officer of the Midland Pacific Railway. [9] The town was incorporated on October 1, 1881. [8] By the early 1900s, the village had become a prosperous commercial and social center for the area. [8] At this time, the nearby town of Lincoln was still relatively small and remote. [8]

McCook is home to the first two-year junior college in Nebraska. McCook Junior College was founded in September 1926 on the second floor of the YMCA building on Main Street. The name was eventually changed to McCook Community College and was governed over the Mid-Plains Area. [20]
