Others, such as Kings Cross engine shed in London, predominantly provided locomotives for passenger workings. Nearly all depots at that time had a number of shunting locomotives. Normally 0-4-0T or 0-6-0T tank engines, they would be allocated to shunting duties in goods yards, carriage sidings, goods depots and docks.
The sheds were furnished with a 50 feet (15 m) turntable, made by Cowans & Sheldon at a cost of £325, though it was not ready for when the station and shed opened. This resulted in some locomotives, particularly the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway owned ones having to run back down the line to Clitheroe in a light engine manoeuvre. [ 6 ]

Initially, the shed handed only WDM-2 and WDS-6 class locomotives, but gradually were allocated WDM-3As, WDG-3As Being one of the three diesel engine sheds in Northern Railway, various major and minor maintenance schedules of diesel locomotives are carried out here.
