The east side of the range fronts a broad, about 100 miles (160 km) wide, lake-studded lowland of forests and swamps, across which rises the gigantic Mount Wrangell (14,163 feet (4,317 m)) volcanic edifice. Alaska Highway 4 runs northward through this lowland.
Karluk Lake has a maximum depth of 457 feet (139 m). [5] To the west, Karluk Lake is bordered by mountains that divide it from neighboring Frazer Lake. To the east, the bay is bounded by the adjacent Thumb Lake, and mountains dividing it from Uyak Bay. In the south, the lake receives the O'Malley River from the adjacent O'Malley Lake.
