When Minnesota was organized as a state, 57 of the present 87 counties were established. The last county to be created was Lake of the Woods County in 1923. [2] The names of many of the counties allude to the long history of exploration. Over ten counties are named for Native American groups residing in parts of what is now Minnesota.

In addition to the current levels of local government, villages and one borough historically also existed in the state, but they have all been abolished.
This is a list of lakes of Minnesota. Although promoted as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", Minnesota has 11,842 lakes of 10 acres (4.05 ha) or more. [ 1 ] The 1968 state survey found 15,291 lake basins, of which 3,257 were dry. [ 2 ] If all basins over 2.5 acres were counted, Minnesota would have 21,871 lakes. [ 3 ]
