Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP) was incorporated in 1944 as the first health insurance plan for public service workers. [9] The company was founded by David M. Heyman with the support of New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who wanted to offer medical services to New Yorkers of “moderate means.” [10] HIP got its first members in 1947.
HIP, which provides health insurance to 762,276 Hoosiers, has been offered since 2007, under former Gov. Mitch Daniels. However, the program was only expanded to include the premium option in 2012.
As of April 19, 2014, 8.02 million people had signed up through the health insurance marketplaces. An additional 4.8 million joined Medicaid. [3] Enrollment for 2015 began on November 15, 2014, and ended on December 15, 2014. [4] As of April 14, 2020, 11.41 million people had signed up through the health insurance marketplaces. [5]
