Holmes Beach is a planned community that was started by John E. Holmes, Sr. after World War II and was named after him. [6] Holmes Beach was incorporated March 13, 1950. Other potential names that were proposed for Holmes Beach were: Palm City, Mid-Island Beach, Coquina Beach and Tarpon Beach. [7]
The southern terminus is the intersection of the John Ringling Causeway and Tamiami Trail (US 41-SR 45) in Sarasota; the northern terminus is the intersection of Gulf Drive, North and Manatee Avenue., West in Holmes Beach. Much of the northernmost five miles (8 km) has been designated Bradenton Beach Scenic Highway.
