The county has a total area of 716 square miles (1,850 km 2), of which 709 square miles (1,840 km 2) is land and 7.6 square miles (20 km 2) (1.1%) is water. [9] It is the third-smallest county in North Dakota by land area and fourth-smallest by total area.

On November 7, 1882, the Griggs County Board of Commissioners voted to locate the county seat on one of Cooper's properties in Cooperstown. Prior to this, the county records were housed in Hope, North Dakota. The residents of Hope were determined that the county seat be located in their town and refused to surrender the records to Cooperstown.
There was a meeting called by the county clerk of Griggs County on February 9, 1888 at 2 PM for organizing Township 146-59, also known as Cooperstown Township. The first township records were destroyed.
