Mary of Bethany [a] is a biblical figure mentioned by name in the Gospel of John and probably the Gospel of Luke in the Christian New Testament.Together with her siblings Lazarus and Martha, she is described as living in the village of Bethany, a small village in Judaea to the south of the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem.
In Agony in the Garden, Jesus prays in the garden after the Last Supper while the disciples sleep and Judas leads the mob, by Andrea Mantegna c. 1460.. In Roman Catholic tradition, the Agony in the Garden is the first Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary [8] and the First Station of the Scriptural Way of the Cross (second station in the Philippine version).
Jesus is quoted in Matthew as assuring that the story of a woman's sacrificial love and devotion to him will have a place in the gospel wherever preached. Mary probably anticipated Jesus's death, but that is not certain. At least her beautiful deed gave Jesus needed support as he approached his awaited hour.
The Eastern Orthodox Church has never identified Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany or the "sinful woman" who anoints Jesus in Luke 7:36–50 [251] and has always taught that Mary was a virtuous woman her entire life, even before her conversion. [251] They have never celebrated her as a penitent. [251]
Jesus foreshadows his death and this is the last anointing, an expensive one at that, that he will receive. Mark states in Mark 1:1 that his book is "the good news of Jesus the anointed one", [13] the word Christ meaning "anointed". The woman understands Jesus' importance more than do the other people there.
Just after sunrise, Mary Magdalene, another Mary, the mother of James, [11] and Salome come with the spices to anoint Jesus' body. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome are also mentioned among the women "looking on from afar" in Mark 15:40, although those who "saw where the body was laid" in Mark 15:47 were only Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses.
Kuhlman had a spiritual experience at age 14, and several years later she began itinerant preaching with her elder sister and brother-in-law in Idaho. Later, she was ordained by the Evangelical Church Alliance. [4] Amanda H. Williams of Brooklyn, New York helped birth Kuhlman's healing ministry. [4] [5]
A young woman in the advanced stages of rheumatoid arthritis was brought to the altar by friends just as McPherson preached "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever". McPherson laid her hands upon the woman's head, and the woman was able to leave the church that night without crutches. [ 82 ]
