Upton County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 3,308. [1] Its county seat is Rankin. [2] The county was created in 1887 and later organized in 1910. [3] It is named for two brothers: John C. and William F. Upton, both colonels in the Confederate Army.

Rankin is a city in and the county seat of Upton County, Texas, United States. [4] Its population was 780 at the 2020 census. [5] It is named after F.E. Rankin, a local rancher. In 2020, only 3,308 people lived in the entire county, and McCamey was the only larger town.
Within Texas' modern boundaries, the county included the Trans-Pecos and most of the Panhandle. The county was abolished when Texas ceded its western lands under the Compromise of 1850. Wegefarth County, formed in 1873 in the Texas Panhandle and abolished in 1876. Worth County, formed in 1850 from part of Santa Fe County.
McCamey is a city in Upton County, Texas, United States.Its population was 1,831 at the 2020 census. [4] The Texas legislature has declared McCamey "the Wind Energy Capital of Texas" because of the many wind farms that have been built in the area.
