Ultimate X-Men #32 Former student at the institute. He went crazy and kidnapped Dazzler in Ultimate X-Men Annual #2 and left the X-Men. Chuck Austen moved from writing Uncanny X-Men to New X-Men, which returned to its old name of simply X-Men, with Salvador Larroca, who had been working with him on Uncanny X-Men doing the art. Finally, Joss Whedon entered as the writer of the new title Astonishing X-Men, with John Cassaday as artist. X-Treme X-Men was cancelled.

During late 2000s, the X-Men's strike team was formed by Cyclops in Uncanny X-Men #493, with Wolverine serving as the field leader. The team took on missions which required responses "too violent or controversial" for the X-Men to deal with directly. When Cyclops disbanded the team, Wolverine assembled a new independent team. [2]
