Ulmus americana, generally known as the American elm or, less commonly, as the white elm or water elm, [a] is a species of elm native to eastern North America. The trees can live for several hundred years. It is a very hardy species that can withstand low winter temperatures, but it is affected by Dutch elm disease.
The cedar elm is a medium to large deciduous tree growing to 24–27 m tall with a rounded crown. The leaves are small, 2.5–5 cm long by 1.3–2 cm broad, with an oblique base, and distinguish it from Ulmus serotina with which it readily hybridizes in the wild.
Ulmus americana var. floridana, the Florida elm, first described as Ulmus floridana by Alvan Wentworth Chapman in the 1860s, is smaller than the type, and occurs naturally in north and central Florida south to Lake Okeechobee.
Wych elm wood is prized by craftsmen for its colouring, its striking grain, its 'partridge-breast' or 'catspaw' markings, and when worked, its occasional iridescent greenish sheen or 'bloom'. The bosses on old trees produce the characteristic fissures and markings of 'burr elm' wood. [38]
Ulmus serotina, the September elm, is an autumn-flowering North American species of tree. It is uncommon beyond Tennessee ; it is only very locally distributed through Illinois , Kentucky , Arkansas , Mississippi , Oklahoma , Alabama , and Georgia , and disjunct populations into Nuevo León , Mexico. The American elm cultivar Ulmus americana 'New Harmony' was raised by the Maryland Agricultural Research Service and released by the United States National Arboretum in 1995, along with 'Valley Forge'. 'New Harmony' proved the most successful U. americana cultivar in the US National Elm Trial, averaging a survival rate of 85.5% overall. [1]
