The ancient district of Kula. Kula roughly extends from Haleakala Highway (Hawaii Route 37) in the north to Keokea in the south—a distance of about 16 miles (26 km) around 20°47'32" N, 156°19'37" W. [4] The largely rural area known as Upper Kula includes the region up-slope (southeast) from Lower Kula, the more densely populated area spread along the Kula Highway.
With an area of 4,028 sq mi (10,430 km 2), it is larger than all of the other islands of Hawaii combined, encompassing approximately 62.7% of the entire state's land area. It is also the largest island in the United States. In modern times, Hawaiʻi is known commonly as the "Big Island" to reduce confusion between the island and the state itself.
Hawaii County has a total area of 5,086.70 square miles (13,174.5 km 2); 4,028.02 square miles (10,432.5 km 2) is land and 1,058.69 square miles (2,742.0 km 2) is water [3] (mostly all off the ocean shoreline but counted in the total area by the U.S. Census Bureau).
The island is coterminous with Hawaiʻi County, the state's only county that covers exactly one island. There are 94 properties and districts on the island, including 10 historic districts, six National Historic Landmarks, and one National Historic Landmark District.
Hauʻula (Hawaiian pronunciation: [hɐwˈʔulə]) is a census-designated place and rural community in the Koʻolauloa District on the island of Oʻahu, City & County of Honolulu. In Hawaiian, hauʻula means "red hau" (hau is a type of tree: Hibiscus tiliaceus). There is a small commercial center. As of the 2020 census, the CDP population was 4,018.
