The institutions merged into CUNY included the Free Academy (later City College of New York), the Female Normal and High School (later Hunter College), Brooklyn College, and Queens College. CUNY has historically provided accessible education, especially to those excluded or unable to afford private universities.
Brooklyn College Academy, founded in 1986 in a partnership between the then-Board of Education and Brooklyn College, served as an alternative school—a program which was created to help older high school students that have not done well in other settings. The school no longer serves this purpose, and is a normal high school in the school system.
Brooklyn College was founded in 1930. [5] That year, as directed by the New York City Board of Higher Education on April 22, the college authorized the combination of the Downtown Brooklyn branches of Hunter College, at that time a city women's college, and the City College of New York, then a men's college (both these branches had been established in 1926).
The school was fashioned as "a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to persons who have been pupils in the common schools of the … city and county of New York". [10] The Free Academy later became the City College of New York, the oldest institution among the CUNY colleges. [11]
Macaulay Honors College accepts applications from high school seniors entering the freshman class. Macaulay does not accept transfer students or applicants applying for mid-term entry. The college advises applicants to research the eight CUNY senior colleges which participate in Macaulay prior to submitting an application.
The "Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education", begun as the Gateway to Higher Education program was started in New York City in September 1986. Its initial goal was to prepare high school students from demographics underrepresented in science, medicine, and technology, for higher education in those fields.
The CUNY School of Medicine also offers a two-year M.S. program in Physician Assistant studies. [4] As of September 2024, Brooklyn College's 8-year coordinated B.A./M.D. program has become another admission pathway into the CUNY School of Medicine. The program currently accepts 15 students per year.
The college opened under the name "New Community College". In April 2013—after the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation gifted a $25 million endowment, one of the largest ever donations to a public two-year college—the CUNY Board of Trustees passed a resolution renaming the college "Stella and Charles Guttman Community College".
