When Ash wins the Manalo Conference, Kukui challenges him to a battle. Despite the assistance of the Legendary Pokémon Tapu Koko, Ash is able to defeat Kukui. He returns in Journeys where he participates in a Battle Royal against Ash, but goes as himself instead of Masked Royal since he wanted Ash to be the star of the battle.

Ash and co. finally arrive at Violet City, where they find a school and he gets asked to give a small talk about Pokémon Training to the kids. However, a kid called Zackie is convinced that Ash's Pikachu is to be his, and when Pikachu runs off, he takes chase with one of Ash's empty Pokéballs.
Ash then sends out Bulbasaur, and then Bulbasaur and Solrock knock out each other. So it comes down to the final battle: Pikachu vs. Regice. After a rough battle being trapped multiple times by ice, Pikachu manages to defeat Regice with an ultra powerful Volt Tackle. Ash wins over Brandon and becomes "Master of the Battle Frontier".
Then, Ash reaches the Lumiose City Gym to challenge the Gym leader but Ash doesn't have 4 badges. So, the Gym paralizes and throws them out. Then Ash and Pikachu meet Clemont and Bonnie, two siblings from Lumiose City, Clemont is an inventor, while Bonnie loves Pokemon but is only 8 years old so she can't be a trainer yet.
While May and Pikachu mourn Ash's sacrifice, Phantom appears and kidnaps Manaphy. Ash, surrounded by a glowing aura from the newly rebuilt Sea Crown, pursues Phantom and retrieves Manaphy. Phantom returns with his ship, but Manaphy leads an assault with several wild Water-type Pokémon to destroy the ship and subdue Phantom in its rubble.
